INNOVA provided services for the preparation and performance of Planning Charrette Services supporting a future design/ construction project to convert Building J00301 from a hangar to a space sufficient for consolidation of the McChord 62nd Airlift Wing Museum. This effort consisted of a one-day planning charrette, with the end result being a report that supports the end user/ customer vision of the facility. Deliverables consisted of a Pre-Final PCR and a Final PCR.
Currently, the museum occupies three separate buildings, with the building housing the bulk of artifacts and displays in a state of significant disrepair. The age and condition of the current building, along with the fact that the museum has outgrown the space, made a major repair project impractical to meet the current needs of the museum. During the assessment of J00301, our team reviewed some customer provided concepts, taking them into consideration in relation to the existing building. Based on discussion with the customer, alternate plans that still met their intended needs were provided, with the intent to avoid any significant re-design of the facility, instead using the majority of the facility in its current state wherever possible. Building J00301 is 72 years old, and although not classified as ahistoric building, facilities over 50 years old are required to be evaluated for historic significance in accordance with the State Historical Preservation Office (SHPO). The majority of recommendations outlined in the PCR had little effect on the exterior of the building, but our team still worked closely with JBLM SHPO representation.
